SERP Feature Mapping: Which Format Wins in Which Query?

·9 dk min read·Editorial Team

What are SERP Features and Why Do They Determine Your Content Format?

The Google search results page (SERP) is no longer just 10 blue links. Dozens of rich result formats such as Featured Snippet, Video Carousel, Image Pack, People Also Ask, Local Pack and Knowledge Panel capture the majority of clicks by appearing above or between organic results. If you do not shape the format of your content according to the SERP features of the target query, you will not get clicks even if you rank 1st.

SERP Feature Map: Format Matching by Query Type

  • "What is X?" / Definition Queries → Paragraph Snippet:Write a short, clear definition paragraph (40-60 words). Make the question H2 title and give the answer just below.
  • "How to do it?" / Step Queries → List Snippet: Number the steps with list <ol>. The first 5 steps appear in the snippet, the user comes to your site for all of them.
  • Comparison Queries → Table Snippet: Use HTML <table> in "A vs B" format. Make column headings clear.
  • Image-Intensive Queries → Image Pack: For queries such as "decoration ideas" or "hairstyles", Google shows an image block. Optimize images in WebP format with descriptive alt text.
  • Queries Expecting Video → Video Carousel: For queries like "Yoga movements", it is almost impossible for you to appear in the SERP without a YouTube video. Add embedded video to your article and use VideoObject schema
  • Local Intent Queries → Local Pack: For queries such as "restaurant near me", a Google My Business profile is essential. Support with LocalBusiness schema.

How to Perform SERP Analysis?

Search your target keyword on Google and examine the structure of the results page. What SERP features appear? Is there a Featured Snippet? Is the video carousel shown? Determine your content format based on this observation. To do this systematically, use Ahrefs or Semrush's "SERP Features" reports; You can collectively see which features are triggered for each query.

Golden Rule: Always analyze the SERP before writing your content. Content that does not present Google's preferred format for that query loses the visibility battle, regardless of its quality.
