What is Search Intent in SEO and Why is it a Ranking Criteria?

·5 min min read·Editorial Team
## What is Search Intent? The holiest term that is first discussed in every meeting where the word SEO is mentioned and whose meaning will not change for decades; is "Search Intent". Classic SEO logic used to be: *"Let me use the word 'Apple tree' at least 10 times in my title, Description section, and paragraphs, so my page gets to 1st place."* However, in today's artificial intelligence, when a user types a query, Google mili-dactically (instantly) perceives whether they actually want to take their wallet out of their pocket and **BUY something**, or just want **INFORMATION** to prepare an assignment, or want to **GO DIRECTLY TO A BRAND'S PAGE**, and changes the search result type in seconds. The era where keywords were king is closed; the rules of the Queen Intent have taken effect. ## The Four Pillars of Search Intent The mental map of users is basically divided into four intents: 1. **Informational Intent:** "What is", "How to", "Symptoms". The user just wants to solve a problem or learn. *Query:* "What is good for hair loss?" *Page Type:* Blogs, Information Guides, Q&A Columns. (If you construct your e-commerce site's Sales showcase here, Google will never give you the 1st rank because the intent is Information). 2. **Navigational Intent:** The user knows the name of the platform they are going to, they are just too lazy to type the URL. *Query:* "Amazon return panel", "Twitter login". *Page Type:* They are directly the brand pages themselves. It is illogical for you to compete in these queries; the intent is to reach the brand. 3. **Commercial Investigation Intent:** The user has entered the idea of buying a product but is looking for a "Comparison and Review" to spend their money smartly. *Query:* "iPhone 15 or Samsung S24 Ultra?", "Best robot vacuums 2026". *Page Type:* Detailed Lists (Top 10), Deep device comparison pages. It is the intent group where Affiliate sites make the most money. 4. **Transactional Intent:** The wallet is open, the credit card is in hand. All decisions have been made, it's the urge to "Just buy and finish the transaction". *Query:* "Buy Macbook Pro m3", "Cheap flight tickets Rome". *Page Type:* Product pages, Free account registration boards. ## Why is Your Ranking Crashing? (Intent Mismatch) If you are targeting the word "Credit Card Application (Transactional)", and you lay out an epic 5,000-word "What is a Credit Card, What Does a Bank Do" article inside that page (If you are Selling Information while the user is looking for a Transaction), you will get stuck on the Search Intent Mismatch and be sent to the bottom by the Google algorithm. Putting massive brick paragraphs in front of a visitor who needs to see an application form (Button) within seconds is a disaster in algorithms.
